Homemade burger buns

Homemade burger buns

Why would you do it at home if you can buy it at the store ? The second option is faster and easier, sure. But read the ingredients… How many ingredients can you not pronounce? The composition is sometimes not that bad but again, homemade allows you to CHOOSE what you put in this dough (and in your body).

Bread is scary. It took me a long time to get myself to try it ; there is something about bread I find impressive. You tell yourself that it is long (true), hard and only bakers can do that but try it and you’ll not buy (as much) ready made bread at the store!

I watched Cooked on Netflix and wow, I was inspired. Michael Pollan has a very interesting relationship with food and his words are powerful and resonated with me in a way I didn’t think of. It even led me to try doing my very own yeast : I’ll tell you more about that soon.

Homemade burger buns (6 buns) :

  • 500g flour
  • 1 packet dehydrated yeast
  • 12cl water
  • 15cl milk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 60g butter
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Combine yeast and flour in a bowl. Add water, milk, cubed butter, salt and sugar.

Mix with your hands until you get a sticky ball of dough. From there, knead for 6-8 minutes. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for 2 hours at room temperature.

Cut your dough in 6 equals parts (142g each for me). Form into balls and flatten it to get a bun shape and size (7cm for me). Brush it with milk and let it rise at room temperature for an hour (near a heat point if you can).

Preheat your oven at 180°C (356°F). Brush with a little more milk and add the sesame seeds.

Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the crust is golden and the buns are fluffy.
