Bagel burgers

Bagel burgers

Well, I think the title says it all here. I made burgers using bagels buns. I had made bagels a few weeks ago and froze some of them and I was really craving a burger.

So, I repurposed the bagels and made burgers with them. I used pretty standard toppings : a garlic seasoned patty (SO GOOD), cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, caramelized shallots and crispy bacon.

I hate mayonnaise in burgers, really hate it. So ketchup and mustard it is here. And voilà, you get this really delicious huge burger and homemade!

Honestly, it was really good! I rarely make homemade burgers because I am often disappointed, I always think "yeah it was ok but something was missing", not this time though! Satisfied and happy!

Bagel burgers (serves 4) :

  • 4 bagels
  • 450-500g ground beef
  • 8 bacon slices
  • 4 large shallots
  • 1 tomato
  • 4 large lettuce leaves
  • 4 cheddar slices
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 thyme sprig
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • 30g butter
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper

Slice shallots thinly and add it to a sauce pan with butter, sugar and a bit of salt. Let it caramelize on low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Mince the garlic and take the leaves out of the thyme sprig.

Add it to the ground beef, season with salt and pepper. Mix with your hands and shape 4 100-125g burger patties.

Shape the patties larger than the buns because they will shrink a bit as they cook.

Slice the tomatoes.

Fry the bacon in a pan with no added fat until crispy.

Toast the opened bagels in the bacon greased pan until toasty and browned.

Add ketchup on the bottom bun and mustard on the top.

Place a large lettuce leaf and a few tomato slices, cover the hole in the middle so the juices won't escape.

Fry the patties in a pan, once you flip it over, add a slice of cheddar on top and cover with a lid to melt it evenly.

Place the patty on top of the tomatoes, add some shallots and the bacon cut in pieces.

Put the top back on and enjoy!
